Amharic, also known as Ethiopian, belongs to the Afro-Asiatic language family and is part of the Ethiopic branch of the Semitic language.

Amharic is a Semitic language spoken in North Central Ethiopia by the Amhara. It is the second most-spoken Semitic language in the world, after Arabic, with 20 million people for which it is the mother tongue, and the official working language of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. Thus, it has official status and is used nationwide. Amharic is also the official or working language of several of the states within the federal system, including the Amhara Region and the multi-ethnic Southern Nations, Nationalities, and People's Region, among others. It has been the working language of government, the military, and of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church throughout medieval and modern times. Outside Ethiopia, Amharic is the language of some 2.7 million emigrants (notably in Egypt, Israel, and Sweden).Semitic was brought to Ethiopia around 1000 BC. Around the 4th century, Ge’ez was the principal language of the country, and became the source of all the Ethiopic language.

Amharic then uses the same alphabet as Ge’ez, and was written from right to left, until it was influenced by Greek, and eventually switched.

The Amharic alphabet is composed of 32 characters, which are all consonants and all have seven slightly different forms in their writing, to express the vowel sound that follows.
